INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut’s Department of Marine Sciences invites applications for the Bucklin Scholars Program at the rank of Assistant Research Professor with a focus on Marine Sciences.

This position provides opportunities for outstanding marine scientists to work in the field of their choice in collaboration with members of the Marine Sciences Department, and to gain teaching experience. The Bucklin Scholars Program is aimed at alleviating barriers to participation and promoting opportunities for individuals from groups that have been historically underrepresented in Oceanography and Marine Sciences. We seek to attract new and diverse scholars to UConn Marine Sciences and provide mentoring to enhance the Scholars’ research, teaching, and professional development portfolios for future academic positions. 

The position can involve teaching the equivalent of 1 course per year or be completely research-based depending on the candidate’s application and mentor(s) support.

Current areas of research include: Coastal processes, Benthic Ecology, Biogeochemical Modeling, Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Fish ecology, Geobiology, Marine Biology, Marine Microbial Ecology, Marine Pollution, Ocean Biogeochemistry, Ocean Modeling, Paleoclimatology, Physical Oceanography, Offshore Environmental Research, Plankton Ecology, Polar Oceanography, Satellite Oceanography, Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through high-quality publications. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful candidates will highlight a commitment to equity and be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants must earn a Ph.D. prior to their start date, but not more than five years before, in a sub-discipline of Marine Sciences
  • Applicants must select a mentor to sponsor their application. Mentors must be a current tenure-track, tenured, or research faculty member in Marine Sciences at UConn (https://marinesciences.uconn.edu/faculty-tenured/)
  • Strong commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion within an academic setting  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct scientific research and produce peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 11-month, position with an anticipated start date of August 26, 2022, pending Ph.D. certification, with an additional 11-month renewal dependent upon satisfactory performance and funding. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the regional Avery Point campus of UConn. Salary for this position will be $65,000.
