The Science & Engineering Librarian engages with the faculty, researchers, staff, and students in assigned academic and research programs to identify current and emerging user needs and to deliver responsive and innovative research and instructional services. The position collaborates with other science and engineering librarians to provide library services to programs across the sciences, as well as with librarians in other disciplines to identify user needs and provide support for interdisciplinary research and teaching. The librarian collaborates with library colleagues to develop and promote services in support of research data management, repositories, scholarly communications initiatives, and digital projects. This position also has collection development responsibilities.

 Responsibilities

• Serves as primary liaison to and actively develops professional relationships with faculty, students and staff in assigned areas
• Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation for students, faculty, and visiting scholars in assigned areas
• Teaches research workshops and class sessions in areas of liaison responsibilities and science related areas; and contributes to the Libraries’ partnership with the Thompson Writing Program (e.g., leads library instruction in first-year writing classes)
• Identifies current and emerging user needs to inform new or existing library programs, services, and partnerships
• Monitors trends in scholarly publishing in areas of liaison responsibilities to inform outreach, programming, and library collections and services
• Develops and manages collections in assigned areas; collaborates with other science and engineering librarians to develop and manage collections in support of research and teaching needs of faculty and students
• Promotes issues and services related to research data management, repositories, data and visualization, publishing, and scholarly communication
• Provides information services and instruction to faculty, students, and the general public
• Contributes to other departmental and library goals and initiatives as needed. Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Participates in professional organizations, and serves the library, University, or community through committee work or other professional capacities.

Education:
Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.

Preferred: BA/BS degree in science or engineering or equivalent academic training.

Experience
Required
• Demonstrated ability to respond to changing needs and priorities
• Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, time and project management skills
• Evidence of knowledge or interest in scholarly communication and research practices in the sciences
• Experience in planning and/or providing information literacy instruction or other teaching experience
• Commitment to high-quality user experience and customer service
• Evidence of commitment to diversity and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Preferred
• Experience supporting science researchers and students in an academic, research, or special library
• Minimum of one to two years of experience working in public services in an academic library
• Academic coursework and/or work experience in the sciences, particularly in engineering
• Experience with collection development

Working Conditions
• Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
• Occasionally positions self to reach high and low shelves
• Normal office environment
• Occasional weekend and/or evening shifts required.

Salary and Benefits
Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $55,000-$80,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
