Position Description: |
Qualifications: The MIT Music and Theater Arts Section is seeking a full-time Director to lead our
vocal ensembles. The rank of Director/Lecturer I holds an initial appointment of three
years with potential for a five-year reappointment to Director/Lecturer II, and further
renewals at that rank.
The qualified candidate has at least two years of conducting experience at the university
level, or equivalent professional experience. DMA or PhD required (ABD considered, but
degree must be conferred by June 30, 2023).
The position of Director is focused on teaching and performance. In addition, we seek
musicians whose record embraces empathy and imagination, and who will contribute to
our program’s goals of inclusivity, diversity, and equity within a context of artistic
excellence. Duties: The primary responsibility is to direct two co-curricular ensembles each semester, currently
including the MIT Concert Choir and MIT Chamber Chorus. In addition, the Director of
Vocal Ensembles will also teach one academic subject each year based on departmental
need and/or personal expertise. Administrative duties associated with leading ensembles are expected. With the successful promotion to Director/Lecturer II some minimal service
to the section is required. The position demands dynamic and innovative teaching, a
willingness to collaborate within the section and the Institute, and substantial engagement
with students during MIT’s nine-month (September-May) academic year. Starting Date: July 1, 2023 Required Materials: Cover letter, CV (including teaching experience), conducting repertoire list with 3
samples of recently conducted programs (list of titles and composers only), three names
of references (with contact information) and links to two video samples (one of a
performance and one of a rehearsal, both showing the candidate from the ensemble’s
point of view) of varied repertoire conducted by the applicant (both samples unedited and
intact). Other evidence of excellence in the field may be referenced in the application
(e.g., via link). Additional materials, including further recordings, a teaching statement,
or examples of work in any sub-specialties, may be requested at a later date. Complete
applications should be submitted by November 1, 2022.
