Agriculture and Life Sciences The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. CALS is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments, and their communities both in New York State and around the world. Department of Food Science in CALS offers one of the premier food science programs in the nation with an enrollment of 130 undergraduate majors. The curriculum applies principles of science and engineering to enhance the nutritional value, safety and quality of foods in the United States and around the globe. Our program integrates the disciplines of chemistry, biology, nutrition, physiology, biotechnology, engineering, communications, and the social sciences to provide a comprehensive and rigorous education that prepares students for employment or graduate study. Our recently renovated building contains state-of- the-art classrooms, teaching laboratories, research laboratories, a sensory evaluation center, a dairy processing plant, a pilot plant, a teaching winery, and a student product development kitchen. Teaching excellence is highly valued and supported by the Department, College, and University. The PI and members leverage by successfully established multidisciplinary research areas include (i) Bioassays for detection, separation, and manipulation of bacteria, viruses, and microswimmers using microfluidics; (ii) Synthesis of polymers and small molecules; (iii) Encapsulation and functionalization of ingredients and bioactives; (iv) Identification and conversion of waste to value-added products (such as bioplastic), and (v) Designing novel porous materials for sequestration of high-value molecules and contamination removal. The lab is well-equipped with various in-house
instrumentation to perform experimental and theoretical work in cutting-edge
areas, housing a full analytical facility with in-house instrumentation and
spacious prototyping and experimentation labs. Researchers in the Abbaspourrad
Lab are experienced in all aspects of academic and industrial research
activities, from experimental design and interdisciplinary collaboration,
through scale-up and commercialization techniques. The team has conducted
research on behalf of many major companies and federal agencies through
sponsored research projects that resulted in the publication of more than 170
peer-reviewed papers and 15 patents; the established platform provides the most
excellent training and experience to tackle complex interdisciplinary projects.
