Position Description:    

The Health: Science, Society and Policy (HSSP) Program at Brandeis University invites applications and nominations for a faculty position focused on population health, community health, and health equity. This position is a non-tenured teaching position at the rank of Associate Professor of the Practice with an expected start in Fall 2023. We are seeking an energetic instructor with experience in population and community health to teach undergraduates in a vibrant interdisciplinary program that includes faculty from across the university.

This “professor of the practice” position is geared toward individuals with relevant and teaching experience who can make connections between the formal healthcare systems and the social determinants of health, including poverty, race/ethnicity, and urban/rural environments. We seek individuals who can teach in areas of health disparities, health communications, and community health. Area of secondary specialization is open, and could include a focus on nutrition, aging, environmental health, global health, or a focused clinical area.

The appointment will be in the HSSP program, an interdisciplinary undergraduate health major offering both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree. The program is one of the most popular on campus, with 200-250 majors and minors enrolled at any one time; however, most upper-level courses are small to provide a discussion-based atmosphere that encourages faculty-student interaction and mentoring. The candidate will be expected to advise students and teach five full-semester classes each year. Faculty can reduce their course load by “buying out” teaching requirements through sponsored research and university service. As contract faculty, professors of the practice are hired, initially, for a 9-month term for 3 years; pending review, future contracts can be renewed for terms of 5-7 years. Part-time teaching contracts could also be considered. This position is subject to budget approval.

The ideal candidate should have both relevant and teaching experience. We welcome applicants who have experience working in health systems engaging with vulnerable populations and hold a terminal degree in medicine/health professions (including MD, DO, NP, RN, PA or similar), public health, health/social policy, social work, law, social sciences, or similar field. Candidates should have a strong background in teaching and familiarity with key academic theories in the field. In addition, the candidate should have a record of engagement with the larger academic and healthcare field that is consistent with HSSP’s goal of educating students about the many biological, sociological, and policy factors that contribute to both health and health inequalities.
