Position Description
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science (MCECS) at Portland State University (PSU) invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Environmental and Water Resources to begin September 2023. The position requires a doctorate in civil/environmental engineering or closely related field. While the primary target of hiring is at the Assistant Professor level, outstanding applicants may be considered at all levels (associate or full professor). A successful candidate will be required to develop an externally-sponsored research program aligned with the department’s strategic vision; use advanced experimental and computational methods to provide knowledge/education that serve society and the environment; teach undergraduate and graduate courses, the latter to include one or more graduate courses in their area of expertise; and serve the profession and the university. Candidates dedicated to excellence in teaching and effective mentoring of students with diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. With a bold new strategic vision of “Bright Minds, Brilliant Cities,” MCECS is growing in many innovative ways. Honesty, integrity, and respect for others, as well as expanding opportunities for social mobility for our students, are key values of our vision (www.pdx.edu/cecs/strategic-vision). The CEE departmental strategic vision includes research themes in prevention, planning, and management of extraordinary events; evaluation, development, and deployment of technologies that promote a better society; and creation and maintenance of healthy environments (www.pdx.edu/cee/strategic-vision). For this position, we seek candidates with a research focus in one or more of the following areas: macroscale hydrology; water resources/water quality management at the watershed and larger scales; and/or river/estuary/coast systems. Familiarity with advanced concepts and tools such as remote sensing, “big data,” machine learning, AI, and FLOPS-intensive computer modeling are of particular interest. Research efforts that consider the effects of climate change are viewed as especially important. A major PSU advantage regarding EWR study in the above areas is the fact that Portland is the center for management of the Columbia River Basin, which extends over nearly 700,000 square kilometers and involves seven states and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Portland State University (PSU) is the most diverse university in Oregon and has been ranked among the “most innovative” national universities by the U.S. News & World Report. Our urban research university is integrated into the heart of the city and is only minutes away from the outdoor beauties of the Pacific Northwest. We offer ABET-accredited B.S. degrees in both Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering and graduate programs at the master’s and doctoral levels. Our 25 faculty members and researchers serve over 380 undergraduate and 80 graduate students. More information about the department is available at www.pdx.edu/cee. The Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science has 96 full-time faculty and enrolls more than 2,800 students who complete bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral degrees, and graduate certificates from our five departments (Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering and Technology Management, and Mechanical and Materials Engineering). The college has a commitment to serving students in a welcoming environment and strives for excellence and impact in our research and teaching missions. More information can be found on the Maseeh College website. Qualifications for all positions: A minimum of a Ph.D. degree in civil/environmental engineering, or a relevant field, is required. Candidates with an ABD will be considered, though the Ph.D. must be completed by the employment start date. Job Duties and Responsibilities: The successful applicant will maintain scholarly and funded research activities; teach undergraduate and graduate classes; advise students; and provide service to the university, professional communities, and to the public. We are not accepting applications for this job through AcademicJobsOnline.Org right now.
