Full-Time Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position in Theoretical Computing Science

The Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position, starting as early as July 1st, 2023, in the broad area of Theoretical Computing Science. The areas of interest include but are not limited to: 

  • Data structures and Algorithms; 

  • Streaming, Sketching, and Big Data Algorithms; 

  • Computational Complexity; 

  • Algorithmic Economy/Game theory and Mechanism Design; 

  • Approximation Algorithms; 

  • Online Algorithms; 

  • Discrete Optimization; 

  • Theoretical Aspects of Parallel and Distributed Computing.

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree by the appointment date. They are expected to have strong research potential, evidenced by publications in high-quality, selective venues (conferences or journals) in Theoretical Computing Science. They should also have strong communication skills and demonstrated commitment to highly effective graduate and undergraduate teaching. They will be expected to establish their own funded research programs, supervise graduate students, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses. Strong potential for productive interactions with other researchers in the Department and in other disciplines at the University of Alberta will be considered an asset. 

The Department of Computing Science is one of the largest and oldest computing science departments in Canada, and one of the best in the world. The Department has 51 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 7 academic teaching staff who are recognized for their excellence in research and teaching at the international, national, and university level. The Department’s student population includes approximately 567 graduate students, 1,193 undergraduate honors and specialization students and over 1,370 undergraduate majors/minors. Approximately 6,116 undergraduate students are enrolled in Computing Science courses each term. The University of Alberta is home to over 40,000 students from 156 countries (divided roughly as 80% undergraduate and 20% graduate students) and 600 postdoctoral fellows.

  2. A full curriculum vitae. 

  3. A 1-2 page research statement to

    1. highlight contributions to their field of research, 

    2. present an overview of their planned research program for ~5 years after their appointment, and

    3. describe how the candidate will interact, collaborate with, and complement other researchers at the University of Alberta. 

  4. A 1-2 page teaching statement including their experience and interests.

  5. A 1-2 page equity, diversity, and inclusion statement which includes the candidate’s contributions and plans to advance EDI in their research, teaching, mentoring, and service.

  6. A recent peer-reviewed published contribution to their field of research, that best exemplifies their research.
