Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Associate) - Photonics Initiative - CUNY Advanced Science Research Center Job ID: 25780 Closing Date: Open until filled Founded in 1847, the City University of New York (CUNY) counts 14 Nobel Prize and 26 MacArthur (“Genius”) grant winners among its alumni. The CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (CUNY ASRC), which opened its doors in September 2014 is an outgrowth of CUNY’s “Decade of Science” initiative, a 10-year-long, multibillion-dollar commitment to elevating science research and education. It is located in a state-of-the-art, 200,000-square-foot building in Upper Manhattan. The CUNY ASRC was founded on the principle that the next great scientific advances will result from the interaction of researchers across different disciplines. Thus, the center integrates five diverse research fields to encourage collaboration among established scientists, early-career researchers, and students in areas that shape 21st-century global science including Photonics, Nanoscience, Structural Biology, Neuroscience, and Environmental sciences. In recent years, CUNY ASRC has attracted many world-renowned professors and researchers due to its excellent location and research facility. It has become the hub for interdisciplinary research networks across New York City.

The Guo Lab at the ASRC is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow. The Guo lab focuses on integrated nonlinear and ultrafast photonics, aiming at developing highly efficient, multi-functional, chip-scale ultrafast light sources and systems for next-generation sensing and computing architectures. The successful applicant for this open position will join these efforts by conducting design, numerical modeling, fabrication, and measurements of integrated nonlinear photonic devices based on emerging material platforms and their heterogeneous integration. The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct independent research within the guidelines of the group and in collaboration with other members of the lab, the Photonics Initiative, and the Advanced Science Research Center. The incumbent will also assist and mentor students in conducting research. This position reports to Professor Guo and is for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years.

The appointment will begin in March 2023 and the end date for the position will be August of a given year as the appointment in this title is based on the academic year calendar.

About the PI and the lab: Dr. Qiushi Guo is an incoming assistant professor at CUNY Advanced Science Research Center. He is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the California Institute of Technology with Prof. Alireza Marandi. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Yale University in Dec. 2019, advised by Prof. Fengnian Xia. Dr. Guo is the finalist of the 2022 Rising Stars of Light, and the winner of the 2021 Henry Prentiss Becton Graduate Prize for his exceptional research achievements at Yale University. His research interests include integrated nonlinear and quantum photonics, mid-infrared photonics, and 2-D materials optoelectronics. He has published 40 peer-reviewed research papers in leading scientific journals including Science, Nature Photonics, Nature Materials, Physical Review Letters, Nature Communications, Science Advances, Nano Letters, Optica, etc. with citations more than 3200 times. He is a reviewer of more than 30 international journals, and he is serving on the editorial board of the journal Micromachines.

The Guo lab is part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment at the Photonics Initiative of ASRC, in which multiple groups share mixed labs, structures, and facilities. Along this line, we truly value and promote the genuine exchange of ideas and expertise. In our lab, postdocs and students will get solid training in theory/numerical simulation, optical/electrical measurements, and device fabrication. The CUNY Advanced Science Research Center provides sophisticated equipment and staff support to researchers, including a state-of-the-art Clean Room/NanoFabrication Facility, a photonic core facility, and RF/mm-wave core facility.
