Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ethical AI 

This Postdoctoral Associate will have a chance to learn from and contribute to an interdisciplinary research team on Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI). 

This Postdoctoral Associate will serve as a full-time in-residence fellow at the Duke Initiative for Science & Society, working under the direction of Dr. Nita Farahany, the Robinson O. Everett Distinguished Professor of Law & Philosophy at Duke University, and Director of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society. The fellow will join a collaborative interdisciplinary research team, Dr. Farahany’s Science Law and Policy Lab (SLAPLab), with a specific focus on the ethical design and analysis of AI and computational systems. The fellow will have the opportunity to research and develop manuscripts concerning the ethical, legal, and social implications of AI and related emerging tech developments (i.e., the metaverse) as a senior member of SLAPLab.  The fellow will participate in ethics consultations to advise AI researchers at Duke within the Athena Institute. This fellowship opportunity will include exploring issues of algorithmic bias, discrimination, transparency, innovation, implications for workforce skilling, and distributional concerns in the development and deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning. 

Qualifications

This one-year fellowship is designed for postdoctoral candidates and the successful candidate will begin in residence at Duke University on August 1, 2023. Fellows must have completed their doctoral degree within the past three years to be eligible for the fellowship and be authorized to work in the U.S. The successful candidate will have working knowledge of computing (such as AI, mobile networks, computing resources, and network infrastructure) as well as the ethical and policy issues surrounding their implementation.
