Position Description:

Associate in Research to support Fostering Sustainability and Broadening and Deeping Connections to the Global Community at Duke University

Connecting with Duke’s larger vision for using knowledge in the service of society, this position will support the formation of a group/center/endeavor that is trying to be a place where the focus is thinking beyond – beyond ourselves, our current situation, our current paradigms – to imagine a future that is more equitable, just, resilient, and sustainable. By centralizing and supporting these endeavors in a coordinated manner, faculty, staff, and students can work together to form a hub for addressing some of the world’s most pressing issues. The new staff member will help provide community connections for potential first-year design projects; handle the legal, liability, and oversight responsibilities to provide both support and accountability for curricular, co-curricular, and the extracurricular programs; and provide an incubator and connector for research focused on sustainability and/or the Global South.

To that end, the position will entail the following:

• Be the primary point of contact for design projects originating in the Global South – these projects could be in first-year design (EGR 101) and other courses

• Support a seminar series including arranging for presenters and handling the logistics of the series

• Assist with the administration of co-curricular and extra-curricular groups aligned with the mission of the group, including assisting with logistical, legal, and other administrative tasks

• Assist in logistical support for the student programs aligned with the focus of the center, including, if desired, being Site Coordinator for projects funded by DukeEngage

The person in this position will collaborate with all similarly aligned units on campus to enhance cooperation:

• Curricular Programs

o Certificate in Global Development Engineering (https://cee.duke.edu/undergrad/degrees/certificates/global-development)

o First-Year Design (https://pratt.duke.edu/undergrad/first-year-design), including the low-income shipping container makerspace

• Extra-Curricular Student Groups:

The staff member will also work collaboratively with other Pratt and Duke entities to maximize student transformation and impact. These centers include:
