Job Description:

A post-doctoral research position is available at Duke University for a candidate with expertise in modeling environmental systems with an emphasis on the provision of ecosystem services. The successful candidate would be funded by a grant from the US Department of Defense (DoD) Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and will have primary responsibility for developing conceptual and mechanistic models relating land use decisions on U.S. military bases to diverse ecological and health outcomes of interest.

The postdoctoral associate will be based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Modeling for Environmental Risks and Decisions Group led by Professor Mark Borsuk. The postdoctoral associate should be able to work effectively with collaborators from diverse disciplinary and other backgrounds and be available for travel to conferences, workshops and project meetings as may be required. This position provides numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration offered at Duke, including the Duke Center on Risk and the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability, and to develop working relationships with researchers at other universities. It is also expected that the postdoctoral associate will take the initiative to propose additional new collaborations and lines of inquiry under the broad theme of environmental benefits and policy, both at Duke and externally.

The postdoctoral associate will be expected to take responsibility for preparing and publishing scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals as first author and contribute to other publications relevant to the scholar's interests. The postdoctoral associate may also contribute to policy reports and other publications. The position is likely to present opportunities for mentorship of graduate or undergraduate students and opportunities for seminars, guest lectures and other avenues to contribute to intellectual life in the department.

An initial term of one year is offered with potential for renewal for a subsequent year contingent on performance. The start date is flexible, but ideally by September 2023.

Requirements:

Candidates should have:

• a PhD in engineering, environmental science, environmental or natural resource economics, ecological economics, or a related field. • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on cross-disciplinary projects. • Evidence of past research productivity in the form of peer-reviewed publications. • Strong oral and written communication skills. • Knowledge of environmental modeling and ecosystem service valuation.

How to apply:

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vita, and the names and email addresses of three references to Dr. Mark Borsuk (mark.borsuk@duke.edu).

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
