The Department of Political Science seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2024. We invite applications from International Relations scholars with a primary teaching and research emphasis in the subfield of global political economy. The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate curriculum by teaching Foundations of International Relations, an intermediate-level course on global political economy and electives in at least one of the following additional areas: postcolonial studies; critical international theory; Indigenous international relations; the international politics of migration; race and international relations; Global IR; or non-Western European approaches to international relations.
The teaching load is five courses per year. We welcome candidates whose teaching and scholarly interests can build bridges to other disciplines or Macalester’s interdisciplinary departments and concentrations, such as International Studies, Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and Islamic Civilization, Community and Global Health, Environmental Studies, Urban Studies and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
Applicants should submit a cover letter that includes a statement of interest in Macalester and discusses demonstrated activity and contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in their teaching, advising, mentorship, curriculum, scholarship, service or community and professional engagement. Strong candidates will have experience and vision regarding teaching and mentorship of students of multiple and diverse backgrounds with attention to structural barriers that limit access to educational opportunities.
Applications should also include a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching interests and philosophy, a research statement, an example of recent scholarship, evidence of effective teaching (e.g. sample syllabi, course evaluations, comments in reference letters), and three reference letters.
Teaching Statements should include:
-Teaching philosophy and statement of effective strategies for teaching and learning;
-Experience teaching, advising, or mentoring undergraduate students;
-Applied knowledge of supporting students of diverse backgrounds, interests, or prior experience with international relations coursework
Research Statements should include:
-Research specialization in international relations;
-Commitment to and interest in maintaining an active research agenda;
-Understanding of scholarly research in a liberal arts college and support of undergraduate student research;
