Position Description
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.
In this role, you will contribute to the research and development of a low-noise amplifier coupled to a cavity resonator for signals as low as 1 fW for neutrino-mass measurement in Project 8. The candidate will also engage in a neutrino experiment in which the Neutrino Program participate, including the neutrino-mass measurement KATRIN and neutrinoless double-beta-decay experiment LEGEND. This position will be working with electronics engineers and cavity resonator scientists to develop the amplifier; and with neutrino scientists and engineers and computer scientists in the participation of the neutrino experiments.
What You Will Do:
Develop advanced RF electronics for the detection of fW-level signals.
Develop analysis software for neutrinoless double-beta decay or direct neutrino-mass measurements.
Report results of above research to supervisor.
Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.
Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of your own work.
Mentor undergraduate students in their research with the research group.
Actively support LBNL’s IDEA and Stewardship initiatives and goals, and participate in outreach efforts.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics, High Energy Physics, Astrophysics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline within the last two years.
Experience with nuclear instrumentation or radiation detection.
Experience with programming and physics analysis.
Ability to work with a diverse range of people.
Ability to perform research independently and as part of a research group.
Demonstrated ability to work in a research environment.
Relevant publication record demonstrating proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.
Desired Qualifications:
Knowledge of RF electronics design.
Knowledge of cavity resonator design.
Knowledge of advanced nuclear and particle physics analysis techniques.
Knowledge of vacuum systems.
Knowledge of cryogenic systems.
How To Apply:
Note that applications can only be made via this Academic Jobs Online URL. For inquiries please contact Kelly Rushing (krushing@lbl.gov).
The following requested application materials listed below must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online:
Cover Letter.
Curriculum vitae.
A list of up to ten relevant publications, including contributions for multi-author publications.
A statement describing current and future research interests (3-page limit excluding figures and references).
Arrange to have 3 letters of reference submitted (at least one reference from outside LBNL/UC Berkeley).
Salary:
The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374-$6,450 and is expected to start at $6,133 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
Notes:
This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
