Position Description:
Assistant Professor Architecture/Built Environment
Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor working at the intersection of architectural design, history and theory beginning Fall 2024. We are conducting a broad search and the successful candidate will combine a creative pedagogy with interest in architectural aesthetics and practice and their social, cultural, or political contexts. Fields of interest may include cultural landscapes, speculative architecture, architectural or environmental technology, urbanism and urban systems, architectural history and sustainable design. Scholars or practitioners whose work engages with historically marginalized communities or subjects that have been underrepresented or understudied in the scholarly discourse or design of the built environment are of special interest. A terminal degree or comparable experience as well as evidence of excellence in teaching and promise of significant contributions to the field are expected.
The annual teaching load is five courses. Candidates are expected to contribute to the Core Curriculum through either a first-year seminar, an interdisciplinary team-taught course centered on science, society, and climate change, or a first-year writing course. In addition, candidates will advise students at the departmental and institutional levels. Among the criteria for appointment are experience with students from diverse backgrounds and/or the ability to teach those students effectively.
Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective, academically challenging institution that offers majors in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Across departments, the college is committed to broadening participation in STEM fields. This position is housed in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts – an interdisciplinary department supporting the college’s liberal arts program. Harvey Mudd is part of The Claremont Colleges and allows opportunities for collaboration with colleagues at the other four undergraduate schools in the consortium and at the Claremont Graduate University. Intercollegiate departments and programs such as American Studies, Environmental Analysis, Media Studies, and Science, Technology, and Society welcome contributions from Harvey Mudd faculty.
Preference will be given to applications received by November 15th, 2023. Applicants are asked to submit: a cover letter, CV, three letters of reference, course evaluations (if available), a statement of teaching philosophy, a research statement, a portfolio (if applicable), and two sample syllabi. We invite applicants to describe how a commitment to diversity and inclusion shapes their professional work. Those selected for the first round of interviews may be asked to submit additional materials. We expect to complete Zoom interviews by Jan. 12, 2024. The salary range for the position is $100,000 -105,000 along with a full health and retirement benefits package, start-up funds for research and teaching, and relocation costs. Harvey Mudd College is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer committed to providing a workplace that fosters diversity and inclusion in its faculty, staff, and student body. We encourage applications from scholars underrepresented in college faculties.
