The William H. Miller III Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics.

The Overstreet group at Johns Hopkins University has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher who is interested in testing fundamental physics in AMO experiments. The goal of the project is to implement matter-wave interferometry with Yb atoms in a laboratory-scale atomic fountain. The experiment will search for ultralight dark matter in the mass range 10^-22 eV to 10^-13 eV by performing differential spectroscopy and accelerometry between internal states of Yb. This multi-channel detection technique has the potential to improve constraints on several dark matter couplings by factors of up to 100 over a broad mass range. The start date is flexible—ideally between November 2023 and August 2024.

The applicant will be expected to work closely with graduate and undergraduate students.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics by the appointment start date. Preference will be given to applicants who have significant research experience with atomic and optical systems.

Applications should consist of a CV, list of publications, brief statement of research, and three letters of recommendation. Inquiries may be sent to Professor Chris Overstreet at

Review of applications will begin on September 1, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.
