INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for a faculty position in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) with a focus on Toxicology/Safety Assessment. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (http://pharmacy.uconn.edu/academics/pharmaceutical-science/) is housed in a 200,000 square foot state-of-the-art building in the science quad at UConn and has a long history of academic drug discovery and development. Departmental faculty include an industry distinguished endowed chair in pharmaceutical technology, an industry distinguished endowed chair in mechanistic toxicology, and a Board of Trustees Professor (https://provost.uconn.edu/awards-honors/). Nationally, departmental faculty serve as chairs of NIH study sections, journal editors, and society presidents and have received prestigious awards for research, teaching, and service. In addition to pharmacology and toxicology, faculty expertise encompasses medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics and the Department supports the research and teaching mission of the UConn School of Pharmacy.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through extramural funding, high-quality publications, and impact as measured through citations and national recognition. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate, professional Pharm.D., and graduate levels, develop innovative courses and instruction methods, and mentor students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent terminal degree, with a minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent research experience) and a demonstrated record of research productivity in the field of toxicology/safety assessment.
• The candidate is expected to continue, or show clear potential for, developing a strong, extramurally-funded research program within the broad area of toxicology.
• The candidate should have the expertise to teach in both the graduate curriculum of the pharmacology and toxicology program and in the PharmD curriculum. 
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The successful candidate will have a deep commitment to promoting diversity through their academic and research programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Preferred areas of research and collaborative strength are broad and include:
  • Signaling pathways mediating toxicant action,
  • Epigenetic toxicology,
  • Developmental and reproductive toxicology,
  • Neurotoxicology,
  • Nucleic acid-based toxicology,
  • Exposome,
  • Non-coding RNAs in toxicant responses,
  • Toxicology of nanoparticles and nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems,
  • Toxicology of biologic drugs, 
  • Immunotoxicology.
• At least two years of postdoctoral experience in an academic, industrial, or similar position.
• Demonstrated scholarly productivity.
• With a renewed emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department, the ability to establish research collaborations with other faculty members in the Department is highly desired.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
• Commitment to effective teaching, through novel teaching methods and integrating technology into instruction.
• The ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2024. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
