The Cornell University Department of Music invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (full-time, tenure-track) in music and sound studies. The appointment will commence July 1, 2024.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or will have successfully defended their dissertation by the position start date. They will cultivate expansive scholarly interests in ethnomusicology or related disciplines while specializing in Black music, broadly conceived. They will demonstrate evidence of scholarly potential with the promise of establishing an international reputation, as well as a commitment to developing excellence in teaching and advising.

The Department of Music at Cornell values historical, ethnographic, and philosophical approaches informed by music-making and performance, cultural and critical theories, and interdisciplinary perspectives. The successful candidate will have experience in ethnographic methods and will be expected to develop and offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Black music and to advise graduate theses in music and sound studies. They will foster connections to other departments, programs, and centers across the University.

[Pay Range: $76,200 - $211,000] Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
