Position Description
The Gibert lab is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join our international team to understand how rising temperatures influence aquatic microbial food webs and their central role in the global carbon (C) cycle by examining how ecological interactions –like predation and competition– mediate these temperature responses, as well as how rapid evolution may in turn influence these processes. Ideally, the postdoc will be interested in studying how thermal performance curves (TPCs) respond plastically or evolutionarily to changes in biotic and abiotic environments as well as the genetic and evolutionary underpinnings of these responses. They would also be interested in studying how ecological interactions and shifts in environmental conditions will influence the genetic makeup of these populations and the effects of these changes on TPC shape. The successful candidate will have experience in one or more of the following fields: Ecology, Thermal Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Community Ecology, Food Web Ecology, Trait-based Ecology, or Microbial Ecology. Experience in Microbial Ecology alone, without a deep understanding of Ecology or Evolutionary Biology would, in principle, not be enough for this position, but each application will be reviewed on its merits. Fluency in data analysis in R is a must, experience with mathematical modeling is plus. Experience with experimental evolution and population genetics, DNA extraction, amplification, sequencing, and bioinformatics, are a plus. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Biology, Evolution, Ecology or allied fields and evidence of strong research productivity through publications and participation in conferences. Applicants without a PhD by the time of application are encouraged to apply provided that they can defend in time to start this position. This is a 2-yr position renewed annually based on performance with possibility for extension beyond a second year. The postdoc will be responsible for: 1) carrying out experimental work, 2) data analysis, 3) manuscript preparation, 4) presentations in meetings (this position comes with funding for one meeting a year), 5) support in grant-writing – provided that the postdoc is interested in gaining such experience, and 5) helping PI support the work of graduate students and undergrads in the lab –in exchange for co-authorship. The researcher will have opportunities to develop side projects under the supervision of the PI. Additional details about the project can be obtained by contacting Jean-Philippe Gibert (jean.gibert@duke.edu). Salary and benefits are commensurate with Duke University standards for postdoctoral associates (starting at NIH level 1). Applicants should submit a CV, and contact information for two people who can serve as references. Applications must be submitted through AcademicJobsOnline.com but contacting the PI prior to submission is encouraged. Review of applications will begin as soon as possible and remain open until the position has been filled. The position could begin as soon as the candidate is available, and priority will be given to candidates that can start as soon as possible.
