Position Description

We are seeking candidates interested in experimental low-mass dark matter searches.

Our postdoctoral fellows are for three years with the possibility of a 2-year renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs, and are provided with salaries comparable to those at other prestigious institutions.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field by the time the appointment begins.  Relevant skills/experience  include dilution refrigerator operation, low-noise electronics, superconducting devices, dark matter search experiments, and low background underground facilities. Our program focuses on a new search for low-mass dark matter that will be housed in the Kamioka mine. Detector technology is based on Transition Edge Sensors. The main responsibilities for the new position will revolve around building up the apparatus and experimental techniques, such as very low energy calibration and background mitigation. We expect to have dark matter science results obtained and published during the initial 3-year period. The position will be based at KEK with frequent travel to Kamioka and occasional travel to Berkeley, USA. The incumbent will work with QUP scientists at KEK and Berkeley, as well as RCNS scientists at Kamioka.

As a WPI research center, QUP is designed to establish an international environment where more than 30% of researchers are non-Japanese. English is the official language of QUP. QUP is an equal-opportunity employer that will build a diverse community of scientists. We welcome qualified applicants worldwide, including women, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities, regardless of race, color, religion, gender identity, etc. About 40% of initial PIs at QUP are female.

The posting shall remain open until the positions are filled, however, for full consideration, we encourage all candidates to apply by December 10, 2023. Applications will only be accepted via AcademicJobsOnline.org. Applicants should submit curriculum vitae (with an email address and citizenship), a statement of research interests, and a list of publications. Applicants should also ensure that at least three letters of reference be submitted on their behalf. They should be uploaded from this page. Email inquiries regarding the application process may be sent to qup_job_inquiry@ml.post.kek.jp .
