Position Summary Works with faculty on grant applications, providing scientific editing to help faculty and their research groups pursue research grant funding, write grant reports, and publish manuscripts. Manages the communication efforts (including social media platforms) of the Department of Physics to promote research and teaching efforts. Updates department web pages.

Job Description - Works with faculty on grant applications, providing scientific editing to help faculty and their research groups pursue research grant funding, write grant reports, and publish manuscripts to improve clarity of writing and highlight the significance of their proposal goals and/or accomplishments to reviewers. - Manages the communication efforts of the Physics Department; develops, implements and manages a communication strategy targeting faculty, students, staff and alumni; develops relationships with department members to identify stories; writes, edits and disseminates feature stories and press releases (as needed on the latter); attends a monthly science communication meeting to pitch story ideas to Arts & Sciences communication and Marketing and Communication (that will feed into the Record and the Ampersand publications); develops relationships with other writers on campus to help them promote Physics teaching and research efforts; creates and manages web content for the Physics website; designs, develops content for and manages the execution of various departmental newsletters (weekly Compton Chronicle, annual newsletter, alumni reunion events); creates, manages and sustains an impactful presence on X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, Facebook; researches, implements, and expands new ways to promote departmental research and teaching efforts. - Supports the Department Chair and Associate Chair by preparing drafts and editing of materials that are needed for Faculty Tenure/Promotion, Faculty searches/recruitment. Keeps faculty handbook updated. Works closely with the Chair on researching and implementing new initiatives. - Opportunity to teach a writing workshop in the summer for faculty and students. - Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions This position is initially limited to two years, but may continue beyond that

Preferred Qualifications - Master’s degree in physics or science writing. - Strong background in science. - Higher education experience. - Business journalism or technical writing background. - Demonstrated knowledge and personal experience in business extremely helpful. - Five years of journalism or technical writing experience preferred. - Excellent editorial skills. - Exceptional interview skills. - Clear and concise writing skills. - Skilled at making complex, dense research material accessible to a general audience. - Significant experience with word processing, spreadsheets, science databases, internet resources and familiarity with social media. - Attention to detail and accuracy are essential. - Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments with various levels of priority. - Strong communicator, skilled in building relationships. - Excellent ability to critically evaluate research in many sub-specialties in Physics. Excellent ability to provide scientific criticism of grant proposals and manuscripts. Ability to look for new and better ways to develop content/perform tasks.

Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related degree. Minimum of three years of journalism or technical writing experience.
