Position Description

Academia Sinica (AS) invites applications for the position of Director of the Research Center of Critical Issues (RCCI) in its South Campus. The initial appointment is for a period of three years, renewable for a second term. We expect the Director to have outstanding academic accomplishments, interdisciplinary research capabilities, and experience in team project management and evaluation.

Established on January 3, 2024, the RCCI is primarily tasked with selecting critical issues based on the forefront of global scientific and technological development and societal needs, and invites scholars and experts from both within and outside AS to form and execute mission-oriented team projects. The planned topics include quantum computers, quantum photonics, ocean energy, next-generation solar cells, etc. The RCCI will establish cutting-edge research facilities, making the South Campus another major base for scientific research in Taiwan. Through the research and development process from topic selection to problem-solving, the RCCI aims to provide energy for innovation and upgrading in the Southern Taiwan Science Park and disseminate research results throughout Taiwan. The Director's mission is to lead the RCCI to flourish and achieve the establishment goals set by AS. (Details can be found on the RCCI’s website: https://rcci.sinica.edu.tw).

Candidates must have a PhD degree and qualify as a Research Fellow or Distinguished Research Fellow at AS. (See the following regulations.) The successful candidate will be affiliated with one of AS’s research institutes or research centers, and concurrently hold the position of Director of the RCCI through a joint appointment. Statutory Qualifications for Academia Sinica Research Fellows and Distinguished Research Fellows

1.In accordance with Article 9 of the Organization Regulations of the Research Institutes of Academia Sinica, Research Fellows shall possess one of the following qualifications:

(1)Have served as a professor, or as an associate professor for at least one year at a national university, private university, or independent academy registered by the Ministry of Education or at a foreign university or independent academy recognized by Academia Sinica. Candidates shall have pursued research work and made important contributions to academic scholarship.

(2)Have received a PhD degree from a national university, private university or independent academy registered by the Ministry of Education or from a foreign university or independent academy recognized by Academia Sinica. Thereafter, the candidate shall have pursued research work for at least six years at a foreign or domestic research institution recognized by Academia Sinica, with important contributions. (Graduates holding a Bachelor of Medicine degree shall have pursued research work for at least nine years at a foreign or domestic research institution recognized by Academia Sinica, with important contributions.)

2.In accordance with Article 10 of the Organization Regulations of the Research Institutes of Academia Sinica, Distinguished Research Fellows shall possess one of the following qualifications:

(1)Have served as a professor (or equivalent position) for at least one year at a foreign or domestic research institution or university (including independent academy) recognized by Academia Sinica with important academic contributions and outstanding achievements, recognized by foreign and domestic academic circles.

(2)Candidates who are Academicians of Academia Sinica.
