The
Mind & Culture (MAC) Lab, directed by Dr. Dorsa Amir in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University seeks a full-time Associate in Research (acting Lab Manager) beginning ideally August 2024 (flexible). The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility to extend for additional years based on performance and funding.
The Associate in Research/Lab Manager will manage all aspects of the research program at the MACLab, which investigates cultural influence on the development of behavior, preferences, and decision-making using the tools of experimental psychology and anthropology. Importantly, the candidate should be comfortable travelling both locally and internationally to countries such as Ecuador, Kenya, and Namibia.
Responsibilities Include:
- Overseeing day-to-day lab operations, including participant recruitment
- Designing, running, and analyzing experiments with children and adults. As is the norm in developmental psychology, data collection with children involves regular weekend and afternoon testing dates (which will always count toward weekly hours), and driving to and from testing sites
- Coordinating, training, and proactively working with motivated undergraduate research assistants
- Maintaining IRB protocols, budgeting and expenses for internal and external grants, website updates, undergraduate award applications, lab purchases, etc.
- Assisting in planning lab events, social brown bag events, invited speakers, and trainings
- Traveling internationally to collaborate with teams, train research assistants, and collect data from participants outside of the United States
Preferred Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in psychology, anthropology, or a related discipline
- One or more years of research experience, preferably with children
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills and the ability to work independently
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
- Extremely efficient in email correspondence
- Skills in Qualtrics for survey design, and R for data analysis
This position offers substantial research experience and would be perfect for someone highly motivated to undertake graduate study (in developmental psychology or otherwise). The Associate in Research/Lab Manager will be involved with scientific presentations, manuscripts, and they will start their own projects in collaboration with Dr. Amir and her students and Postdoctoral scholars.
