Position Description

The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) at Duke University in Durham, NC is conducting a search for a postdoctoral associate in Global Social Medicine and Health Humanities. The successful candidate’s research agenda should be informed by questions connected to (1) the social aspects of clinical spaces, broadly construed; (2) the social impacts of medical and public health challenges; and/or (3) the social relationships between climate and healthcare. Geographic area of expertise is open.

The postdoctoral associate will develop their own research agenda (50% effort), and will work on the strategic planning and implementation of a new initiative in global social medicine and health humanities at Duke led by Prof. Harris Solomon (50% effort). The associate will have access to Duke’s resources that can support development in skills of grant writing, building research partnerships, and educational skills.

The position comes with two years of funding and the possibility for extension based on mutual interest and funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience, according to the NRSA scale and Duke postdoctoral associate salary guidelines.

Qualifications/Skills

Required

Doctoral or terminal degree (PhD, MD) in a relevant field, including but not limited to: Anthropology, History, Social Medicine, Public Health, Science and Technology Studies (STS), American Studies, Area Studies, and related interdisciplinary fields in the interpretive social sciences and humanities. Experience in the implementation, writing, and dissemination of scholarly research in topics connected to social medicine and the medical/health humanities. Experience or interest in developing initiatives with partners in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and/or underserved communities in the US that mobilize the perspectives and methods of fields contributing to social medicine and medical/health humanities. Perspectives and experiences that reflect a strong commitment to equity.

Preferred

Experience in collaborative social and humanistic research. Experience in developing networks that build intellectual community.
