Research Scientist
The Sanford School invites applications for a Research Scientist to support and collaborate with Prof. Manoj Mohanan on research projects related to health economics and policy in global health settings. For example, these projects in India and Kenya include a study on use of diagnostic information to improve quality of care / physician behavior, and development of a large-scale health insurance research program. The successful candidate will join a team of collaborators across multiple universities and countries.
The candidate will participate in all aspects of the research process. There will be ample opportunities to plan new projects, prepare proposals, presentations, and manuscripts with the PI and collaborators.
The candidate will be responsible for:
Planning and execution of field research projects in India and Kenya, in collaboration with project PIs. Execution will include development of protocols, IRB applications, securing project permissions as necessary, drafting MOUs with partner institutions, supervision of field research, and monitoring of data collection and analysis.
Assisting Prof. Mohanan on development and publication of scientific manuscripts (with expectation that the candidate will be a co-author on all publications), targeted at journals in economics, public policy, and global health.
Mentoring and supervision of research assistants on the research team, including undergraduate, masters, and PhD students.
Interacting regularly with collaborators on ongoing projects, as well as with external stakeholders related to these projects.
Coordinating with all project staff including data coordinators, research assistants, project coordinators
In addition, the position will also provide the successful candidate flexible time to pursue their own research interests including opportunities to develop independent research projects and publications.
The position will also require international travel to field sites as necessary, up to two trips per year.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Health Economics, or related fields, with rigorous training in econometrics and programming skills.
- Expertise or demonstrated interest in economics of global health.
- Experience participating in and/or coordinating collaborative experimental or field-based research projects with primary data collection.
- Strong record of contributions to research publications or presentations aimed at multi-disciplinary audiences in economics and global health.
- Ability to handle a variety of tasks, to effectively solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and to shift priorities rapidly.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Creativity, curiosity, and the desire, persistence, and ability to create scientific advances in health economics and global health.
- Familiarity with India and / or Kenya is desirable.
The two-year position has an expected start date of July 1, 2024.
