Position Description

By 2050, >150 million people worldwide will be living with different forms of dementia, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD), the most common presenile dementia in people under age 60 with dysregulated RNA metabolism as a key pathogenic mechanism. To tackle this pressing global health challenge, the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School established the Frontotemporal Dementia Research Center (FTDRC) in 2023. The FTDRC is located in the Albert Sherman Center, a start-of-the-art research building that also houses the RNA Therapeutics Institute (RTI), the Department of Genomics and Computational Biology, and the Department of Pathology.

The FTDRC invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant or associate professor level, with the RTI as the home department. Highly accomplished candidates at the full professor level will also be considered. The RTI is a world leader in RNA biology and in developing RNA-based therapies. RTI faculty members include a Nobel Laureate, three members of National Academy of Sciences, one member of the National Academy of Medicine, two Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigators, six endowed chair professors, and many highly talented mid-career and junior faculty. We seek a highly creative and collaborative scientist who uses cutting-edge technologies in any experimental systems to address fundamental questions in RNA biology in order to enhance our understanding of FTD and related neurodegenerative diseases and to identify novel therapeutic targets. The salary and start-up package will be highly competitive and commensurate with the high level of accomplishment expected of successful applicants.

The application package should include (1) a brief cover letter; (2) a detailed CV demonstrating strong evidence of scientific productivity and academic excellence; (3) a research vision statement of up to three pages; (4) a one-page teaching statement; (5) at least three recommendation letters to be uploaded to academicjobsonline.org. The application deadline is October 1, 2024; however, late applications will be considered as well until the position is filled. If needed, please direct inquiries to Dr. Fen-Biao Gao at fen-biao.gao@umassmed.edu.
