Position Description
Postdoc in Quantum Algorithms
Professors David C. Del Rey Fernández and Hans De Sterck in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invite applications for a Postdocoral positions in quantum algorithms. The role will be in support of and in collaboration with a project funded by the National Research Council of Canada entitled “Efficient and mathematically robust quantum algorithms for linear and nonlinear partial differential equations”. The position is guaranteed for two years with funding available for a third year, based on performance. The University of Waterloo provides an exceptional environment for cutting-edge research and collaboration particularly for quantum computing research with world-leading institutions like the Institute of Quantum Computing and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. The salary for this position is $75,000 with no teaching duties (the position comes with the possibility to teach one course if desired with appropriate remuneration).
The successful candidate will work on the theoretical aspects as well as the practical implementation of quantum algorithms aimed at solving partial differential equations on quantum computers that benefit from quantum speedup while retaining provable properties. The aim of the project is to fully detail the required algorithms including state preparation, quantum linear solvers (e.g., HHL and modern variants), as well as designing quantum numerical methods that result in quantum speedup. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with government and academia in developing such methods as well as provide mentorship to graduate students associated with the project.
Skills:
- PhD (or near completion) in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or related field
- Experience with the theory and practical implementation of quantum algorithms (e.g., state preparation algorithms and quantum linear solvers)
- Experience with software frameworks for quantum simulation (e.g., Qiskit)
- Strong coding background
- Strong publication and presentation track record
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and planning and time management skills
About the Department of Applied Mathematics:
The Department of Applied Mathematics is one of four departments that, together with the School of Computer Science, comprise the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. With 300 faculty members, 8,000 undergraduate students and more than 1,000 graduate students in mathematics and computer science, Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics is a global powerhouse in research, education and innovation. The Applied Mathematics department has 30 regular faculty members. Research in the department is enhanced by interdisciplinary and industrial collaborations and links to interdisciplinary institutes including the Institute for Quantum Computing, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute, the Centre for Computational Mathematics, and the Waterloo Climate Institute. The department has a substantial graduate program with over 100 graduate students and strong undergraduate programs in applied mathematics, scientific computing and mathematical physics. More information about the department can be found at https://uwaterloo.ca/applied-mathematics/.
Candidates should submit a cover letter and curriculum vitate. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation.
We appreciate all replies to this advertisement, but only applicants under consideration will be contacted.
Screening of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. All applications received by May 31 will be given full consideration.
