The Carreira-Rosario lab in the Biology Department at Duke University is looking to hire a Associate in Research. This researcher will work on improving existing and developing new methods to analyze imaging data sets as well as assist in maintaining the computing infrastructure of the lab. Imaging data sets will mainly be of neural activity recordings using genetically encoded calcium indicators. Additionally, this research will develop computational methodologies to extract meaningful information from this neural activity. The candidate will work closely with experimental biologists to design experiments. Contributions will merit authorship in subsequent publications. This position requires a minimum of a BS or BA degree.

The project focuses on tracking the activity of neural populations that turn on early in the life of an animal to dissect their function in the developing brain. This project uses fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) as an experimental system. The predicted time allocation for these responsibilities is:

● Improving existing methods and developing new methods to analyze imaging data sets (50%): Together with other lab members the candidate will review and evaluate existing analysis pipelines, identify areas for improvement, and implement modifications to increase accuracy, efficiency, or applicability.

● Data analysis and interpretation (40%): The candidate will also contribute to the development of new methods to extract biologically relevant information from data sets as well as analyze and interpret the results obtained from the improved/developed methods.

● Assisting in maintaining the server and computing infrastructure of the lab (10%): This includes managing and troubleshooting server systems, ensuring data storage and backup systems are functioning properly, and optimizing the computing environment for efficient data processing and analysis.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain research experience and publish in preparation for graduate school or to move into the private sector. It is preferred that the candidate commits for one year. Should the candidate be interested, this position has the potential to extend beyond one year, offering the opportunity to transition into a more permanent role within the lab.
