Position Description
Research Assistant Professor of Sustainability
The School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking to hire a Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) to advance collaborative research efforts at the intersection of sustainability, and Human Computer Interaction. The candidate will be key to pushing forward the School’s vision and leadership in this area, and will work closely with faculty and leadership in the department to envision, execute, and evaluate convergent research programs.
Human-caused climate change continues to cause harm to ecosystems, communities, and individuals. Computing and AI have often been positioned as a solution; however, extraordinary challenges remain in inventing, applying, and evaluating computing technologies that responsibly address or mitigate the harms of climate degradation. As we rethink traditional scientific approaches, the School seeks to employ a Research Assistant Professor who can actuate convergent research on sustainability and human computer interaction, bringing together intellectual, technological, and methodological tools from different fields to address complex global challenges that threaten ecological stability and human well-being. This candidate will engage in use-inspired research that blends insights in socio-technical systems with deep understanding of artificial intelligence, computer systems, and computer interfaces. This candidate will be a multiplying force for research programs at this nexus of human centered computing and sustainability.
The Research Assistant Professor will report to Josiah Hester (Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Center for Advancing Responsible Computing) and Shaowen Bardzell (Professor and Chair of School of Interactive Computing).
We welcome applications from a variety of disciplines, including human-computer Interaction, engineering and computer science, philosophy, design, information science, Science and Technology Studies (STS), communication and culture, media studies, anthropology, and the humanities. Teaching in the School may be an option, depending on availability and interest. We encourage applications from backgrounds traditionally marginalized or underrepresented in the field.

• Perform service duties to the School and the broader academic community.
Requirements
• A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Human-Centered Computing, or a closely related field.
• A proven publication record demonstrating impactful research in highly regarded venues.
• Strong capabilities in collaborative research project management.
• Keen interest in research fundraising.
• Experience in mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate student researchers.
• (Optional) Ability to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate teaching programs.
