Position Description:
The Department of Physics of Harvey Mudd College, one of the Claremont Colleges, has an opening for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, beginning August 2025. The department (https://physics.hmc.edu/) has thirteen full-time members; we graduate about 20 physics majors each year, a majority of whom go on to Ph.D. programs in physics and related fields.
We seek candidates with broad intellectual interests who can excel at teaching outstanding undergraduates and establish an active research program involving undergraduates. Applications should demonstrate a candidate’s interest and ability to teach broadly in the undergraduate physics curriculum, including regular contributions to teaching and design of either experimental or computational physics courses. All departments at Harvey Mudd contribute to the Core Curriculum, which includes a first-year course in academic writing as well as a course centered on the relationship between science and society. We welcome applications from outstanding candidates regardless of subfield, but we are particularly interested in a candidate who can develop a vibrant research program in atomic physics, geophysics, materials science, or condensed matter theory.
Among the criteria for appointment are experience with students from diverse backgrounds and/or the ability to teach those students effectively, and candidates with a demonstrated commitment to engaging a diverse student body and broadening participation in physics are especially encouraged to apply.
For full consideration, applications should be received by 15 September 2024, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. On-campus interviews will include both teaching an upper-division physics class and presenting a research colloquium. Applicants should apply on AcademicJobsOnline, where they should submit: (1) a curriculum vitæ; (2) a statement of teaching experience and interests; (3) a statement addressing the candidate’s insights on teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds; (4) a statement of research interests that describes how undergraduates would be involved in the proposed research; (5) three letters of reference, at least one of which addresses teaching ability or potential; and (6) undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Unofficial transcripts are fully acceptable, and delays in obtaining transcripts will not affect initial review of applications. Please address the cover letter to Professor Theresa W. Lynn, Chair, Department of Physics, Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA 91711.
