Position Description
Level A $95,241 - $102,040 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies. Fixed term position for 2 years Research Associate opportunity with the University of Adelaide’s IceCube team, to expand and further develop the existing research program in high-energy neutrino astrophysics. IceCube is the world’s largest neutrino observatory and has recently announced the discovery of the AGN NGC1068 as a neutrino emitter. We seek applications from highly motivated researchers who will make a strong contribution to the IceCube science program, and to the development of the design of the proposed IceCube-Gen2 observatory. With the over-arching goal of understanding the nature and distribution of neutrino sources throughout the Universe, research areas could include: development of advanced event energy and direction reconstructions; methods for interpreting the structure in the neutrino sky map, and how this is influenced by the number, class and distribution of sources through the Universe; analysis of existing data sets; and calculations of the sensitivity of IceCube-Gen2. Previous experience with any of the IceCube data processing, simulation, reconstruction or analysis software would be advantageous. There will be numerous opportunities to collaborate across the areas of astrophysics programs in cosmic rays (Pierre Auger Observatory) and gamma rays (H.E.S.S./CTA), as well as programs in direct dark matter detection (SABRE), gravitational wave detection (LIGO) and astrophysics theory. The successful candidate will be required to have excellent written and verbal communication skills and should hold a PhD, or equivalent higher degree awarded or equivalent research experience in the areas of experimental astrophysics or experimental physics. To be successful you will need: • A commitment to develop an innovative research programme in high energy neutrino astrophysics with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory • Advanced computational skills, including demonstrated ability to develop computer codes for the simulation and analysis of data from astrophysics and/or physics experiments • A willingness to travel for conferences, meetings and longer collaborative visits to international institutions in the IceCube Collaboration • A desire and ability to co-supervise, motivate, and mentor research students at undergraduate and PhD level • An ability to work in close collaboration with others Enjoy an outstanding career environment The University of Adelaide is a uniquely rewarding workplace.
