Position Description

Part-time Lecturer, Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

COURSE NUMBER / TITLE: SAR HS 783 Metabolic Regulation; Credits 4 Lecture Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences seeks a part-time instructor for a graduate-level nutrition course, Metabolic Regulation. The course is a four-credit offering which meets in-person on the Charles River Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in the Fall 2024 semester, which begins on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

There may be some flexibility to adjust the day/time offering of the course, in negotiation with the Program Director. The instructor will have full access to all course materials that were updated this past year, along with the support of a TA/grader.

COURSE DESCRIPTION This graduate-level course in advanced nutrition biochemistry is designed for students who have already completed undergraduate coursework in both nutrition and biochemistry. Building upon foundational knowledge, this course delves deeper into the intricate biochemical processes that underpin human nutrition. The course offers a comprehensive exploration of the metabolism and biochemistry of macronutrients (carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins) and select micronutrients. Chemical properties, digestion, absorption, distribution, and cellular metabolism are covered with an emphasis on the regulation and integration of metabolic pathways.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Explore the chemical structures and biological roles of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) and specific micronutrients; 2. Understand how the digestion, absorption, transport, and utilization of macronutrients impact biochemical and physiological processes in metabolism; 3. Follow the process of converting dietary components into chemical energy within cells; 4. Analyze how macronutrient metabolic pathways are integrated and regulated in both fasting and fed states; 5. Investigate how macronutrient metabolism affects cellular functions, tissue balance, interactions between organs, and the overall functioning of the body; 6. Examine the critical links between nutrition, metabolism, and their effects on health and specific disease states.

Required Skills:

• Graduate degree in Nutrition or a closely related field required; PhD preferred

• Prior experience with college-level course instruction required; prior graduate-level instruction preferred
