Stewart Detention Center Clinical Fellow, Immigrant Rights Clinic, Duke University School of Law
Duke Law seeks to fill a Clinical Fellow (Duke job title Lecturing Fellow) position to provide legal services at the Stewart Detention Center located in Lumpkin, Georgia through its Immigrant Rights Clinic beginning in August 2024.
Duke Law has deep faculty, student and institutional engagement in immigrant and civil rights. The Clinical Fellow for the Stewart Detention Center will work closely with the two faculty members in the Immigrant Rights Clinic—its Director and Supervising Attorney. Working under the supervision of the Clinic’s faculty, they will help supervise student casework involving services for migrants detained at the Stewart Detention Center. They will also assist in launching and supervising pro bono projects through the Duke Immigrant & Refugee Project (DIRP) to assist migrants detained at the Stewart Detention Center. The Clinical Fellow may also coordinate referrals to other legal service providers to assist detained migrants seeking release from custody and/or defense against deportation. This appointment requires the Clinical Fellow to meet with detained migrants at the Stewart Detention Center in person and to appear at the Stewart Immigration Court in person as needed to facilitate representation through Duke’s Immigrant Rights Clinic and to supervise and facilitate the provision of limited legal services through DIRP’s pro bono projects.
The term of the appointment is for one year. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and competitive with similar fellowship positions at other top U.S. law schools.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A J.D. degree and bar admission at the time of application.
- A minimum of three years of relevant experience.
- Experience supervising student interns and volunteers.
- Excellent research, analytical, communication, organizational, and writing skills.
- Strong inter-personal skills, including cross-cultural communication.
- In-depth knowledge of, and practical engagement in representing detained migrants in custody and deportation defense matters.
- Experience engaging with national advocacy movements, immigrant rights campaigns, and diverse stakeholders.
- Spanish proficiency preferred.
