Position Description

The Yoder Lab in the Biology Department at Duke University is looking to hire an Associate in Research. This researcher will work on improving existing and developing new methods to generate and analyze genomic data as well as assist in maintaining the computing and wet lab infrastructure of the lab. The candidate will work closely with all lab members including undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and visiting scientists to lead and assist with projects in evolutionary genetics. Contributions will merit authorship in subsequent publications. This position requires a minimum of a BS or BA degree in Biology, Genetics, or Computer Science.

Projects in the Yoder Lab focus on the biodiversity of Madagascar and range from basic science in ecology and evolutionary biology to applied conservation. Specific interests at present include speciation mechanisms in the cryptic primate radiation of mouse lemurs (genus Microcebus) and the estimation of germline mutation rates across the primate clade.

Desired skills include: ● Experience or willingness to learn molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, RNA extraction, electrophoresis, and tissue culture. ● Duties include assistance with ongoing research projects and lab managerial functions such as ordering, monitoring of lab equipment, safety, SOP’s, etc. ● Improving existing methods and developing new methods to analyze genomic data sets. Together with other lab members the candidate will review and evaluate existing analysis pipelines, identify areas for improvement, and implement modifications to increase accuracy, efficiency, or applicability. ● The candidate will also contribute to the development of new methods to extract biologically relevant information from data sets as well as analyze and interpret the results obtained from the improved/developed methods. ● Assisting in maintaining the server and computing infrastructure of the lab. This includes managing and troubleshooting server systems, ensuring data storage and backup systems are functioning properly, and optimizing the computing environment for efficient data processing and analysis.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain research experience and publish in preparation for graduate school or to move into the private sector. It is preferred that the candidate commits for two years.
