Position Description

The Macalester College Department of the Classical Mediterranean and Middle East invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Arabic. Candidates should demonstrate passion and ability for teaching Modern Standard Arabic at all levels, conversance with Arabic dialects, as well as research and teaching interests in the literature, history, cultures, and/or societies of the classical Arab world. Strengths in pre-Islamic literature and interdisciplinary approaches to the classical Arabic literary sources are particularly welcome. This is the sole tenure-track position devoted entirely to Arabic language and literature within a thriving undergraduate program conceived inclusively as the area study of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East in classical antiquity, with language sequences in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. Independently developing and leading an Arabic language program will be a central feature of the position.

We are especially interested in applicants dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research in a liberal arts setting and committed to working with students of a wide variety of backgrounds. Demonstration of effective teaching methods and a comprehensive research trajectory will be prioritized in the application review. The Department of the Classical Mediterranean and Middle East is deeply committed to the College’s distinctive mission of educational excellence with a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. Strong candidates will have a record of experience in teaching and mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds and in creating inclusive classrooms.

Macalester College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college in the vibrant Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, with a population of approximately three million people and home to numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota. Macalester's diverse student body comprises over 2000 undergraduates from all 50 states and the District of Columbia and over 90 nations. As an equal opportunity employer supportive of affirmative efforts to achieve diversity among its faculty, Macalester College strongly encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented minority groups. International scholars will receive H-1B visa assistance if selected for this position.

Please note that candidates who are invited for a campus interview will be required to complete faculty screening questions, and offers of employment are contingent upon a successful criminal background check at the time of offer. For further information about the position, contact the department chair, Nanette Goldman (goldman@macalester.edu), or visit the College’s website (www.macalester.edu).

Please submit a letter of application, a C.V., a graduate school transcript, three letters of reference, and a description of teaching and research interests by October 1, 2024 to academicjobsonline.com, if you wish to be considered for this position.
