Position Description
Duke Title: Adjunct Instructor
Program Role: Subject Area Methods (SAM) Instructor
Duke University’s Master of Arts in Teaching Program is looking for content area specialists to serve as Subject Area Methods (SAM) Instructors for the upcoming academic year.
SAM instructors work closely with the teacher candidates in their content areas (English, Math, Science, or Social Studies) to develop the pedagogical dispositions and competencies necessary to plan, implement, and evaluate great instruction within their content area. Supplementing whole cohort instruction on culturally sustaining methods, assessment, and research, SAM instructors provide teacher candidates with the scaffolds to deepen their knowledge of practice in their specific field.
SAM instructors embed equity, justice, and anti-racism into their teaching, modeling better practices for building learning communities that hold high expectations for all students and teachers.
Expectations
● Lead thirteen, three-hour methods courses covering topics such as content area planning, disciplinary thinking, and assessment during Summer II and Fall terms
● Provide detailed, timely feedback on unit plans, lesson plans, and instructional materials
● Support candidates in the development of professional networks
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
● Experience
○ 10+ years of educational experience
○ 5+ years of secondary classroom teaching experience
○ Supervision/mentorship of preservice/early career teachers
○ District/state level professional development presentations
● Education
○ Master’s Degree
Desired Qualifications
● Experience
○ 10+ years classroom teaching experience
○ University level instructor of record (methods and/or content area courses)
○ Supervision/mentorship of preservice/early career teachers
○ National level professional development presentations
● Education
○ Doctoral level coursework or doctorate in Teacher Education, Curriculum Development, Educational Equity (or related)
○ National Board Certification
