The Morris lab in the Biology Department at Duke University seeks to hire an Associate in Research (AiR), who will assist with several research studies of plant population ecology. The main project is a study of at-risk Venus flytrap populations within its native range in North Carolina. The AiR will assist with conducting field experiments manipulating climate variables and fire frequency at multiple field sites in North Carolina, as well as assisting with a long-term demographic field study of natural flytrap populations. On this project, the AiR will also assist with data management, statistical analysis of the data, and construction and analysis of population models. All of these tasks will give the AiR valuable skills that would benefit them in applying to graduate programs or seeking permanent positions (e.g., in government agencies or conservation NGOs). The AiR will also assist with data management, analysis, and modeling in a long-term demographic study of tundra plants. In that project, there is a possibility that the AiR will assist with field work in Colorado, New Mexico, and/or Alaska.

The AiR will work closely with Dr. Morris and with collaborators at other universities. It is expected that the AiR’s contributions to the projects will merit authorship in peer-reviewed publications, and the AiR will be encouraged to develop side projects of their own. This position requires a minimum of a BS or BA degree in Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Sciences. Prior research experience in field ecology is highly desirable, but could be substituted by extensive outdoor experience. Statistical and/or modeling experience is also a plus.
