Position Description
The Program in Data Science (https://datasciencemajor.stanford.edu) in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University is seeking a full-time lecturer to teach courses for the new undergraduate Data Science majors. These interdisciplinary majors prepare students for a world in which data is ubiquitous. We hope to welcome to our community a master teacher who is passionate about working with diverse students at different stages of their Stanford career—from freshman year courses in probability and data science, to capstone courses in senior year. The initial appointment will be for three years, beginning in September 2025. This position may be renewed depending on budget availability. The teaching requirement for full-time lecturers is 2 courses per quarter. When possible, these will be 2 sections of the same class. The successful candidate will have an excellent teaching record and at least a Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or a closely related field. Plus factors may include: a PhD degree in one of these fields, experience applying recent advances in data science pedagogy, and a demonstrated commitment to building an inclusive environment. Candidates should apply through Academic Jobs Online and submit: • A cover letter • Curriculum vitae • A teaching statement (no more than three single-spaced pages) • Teaching evaluations Additionally, candidates should be prepared to provide the names of three referees for letters of recommendation upon request. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by November 8, 2024. Candidates with questions may email the Director of the Program in Data Science, Professor Dennis Sun (dlsun@stanford.edu). The Program in Data Science, School of Humanities and Sciences and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an inclusive academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and outlooks. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these ideals. The base pay range for this nine-month academic appointment is $80,000 - $99,000 for 2024-25. Note that this does not include summer salary. Lecturers have the opportunity to teach additional courses in summer for additional salary but are not required to. Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
