Position Description:
   

The Department of Biology at Duke University seeks applicants to join a dedicated teaching team as an Instructor B for the Gateway to Biology: Molecular Biology course. This entry-level course introduces major concepts in biology through the lens molecular mechanisms that comprise the Central Dogma, DNA structure and function, and protein structure and function. The laboratory project encompasses construction of a yeast genomic library, molecular cloning, PCR, sequencing, and genomic analysis. The primary role of the Instructor B position is to teach in-person lab sections. Training will be provided. The duties include but are not limited to: providing instruction and supervision for students in your assigned sections during the scheduled lab periods; grading the written and oral assignments of students in your lab sections; participating in Friday afternoon weekly prep sessions and staff meetings; attending active learning-style class periods three mornings per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday); assisting with the preparation and grading of lecture quizzes and midterm and final exams; and meeting with students during office hours outside of scheduled class time. This position will require an average of 30-35 hours of work per week. The workload will vary from week to week depending on the amount of personal preparation required, the number and type of assignments to be graded, and time spent meeting with students outside of class.

The Instructor B is expected to teach two to three lab sections each semester, depending upon class enrollment. The successful candidate will have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Biology or closely related discipline and some teaching experience.
