Position Description:

As part of the Empire Innovation Program, the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University (SBU) seeks to hire either an Associate Professor, Empire Innovation or an Early Career Empire Innovation Scholar (tenure track), to begin Fall 2025. Applicants who are either experimentalists or theoreticians with a strong interest in chemical biology, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, or medicinal chemistry, broadly defined, are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree and postdoctoral experience in either Chemistry or a closely related field, a demonstrated excellence in innovative research, and a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate chemistry in organic and/or biological chemistry. The new faculty member is expected to establish, or have established, a vibrant, extramurally funded research program that will enhance the research enterprise at SBU, not limited to conducting fundamental research, supporting translational research projects that generate new intellectual property, and/or enabling multi-PI grant proposals. The program may synergize with Stony Brook University's strategic priorities in global health, quantum information, and climate change and/or existing departmental strengths in light-driven chemistry, imaging and sensing, the chemistry-biology interface, materials, computation and data-driven chemistry, and synthesis and catalysis.

Research in the Department of Chemistry is highly interdisciplinary. Many faculty have cross-appointments in other departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and the Renaissance School of Medicine, and at neighboring institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Faculty in the department are members of various institutes and centers which serve as hubs for interdisciplinary research; these include the Institute for Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery, the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology, the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, two DOE-funded Energy Frontier Research Centers on synthesis science and energy storage, the Center for Advanced Technology in Integrated Electric Energy Systems, and the Center for Advanced Study of Drug Action. The NIH-funded Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Program and the NSF-funded Research Traineeship Award provide additional graduate student training and connectivity. BNL, a 30-minute drive from the department, provides state-of-the-art facilities for chemistry, nanoscience, and energy, including the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source II. The recently completed Medical and Research Translation building of the School of Medicine is a focal point for translational research and bioimaging.

SBU is a dynamic public university and an internationally recognized research institution, with over 900 research faculty, 27,000 students, and ~$260M in annual research spending. We have been rated in the top 1% of universities worldwide and 39th among U.S. universities (QS University Rankings), 23rd in public institutions (Forbes), and top 10 most diverse U.S. campuses (24/7 Wall St/USA Today). Forbes has rated. SBU as 7th in their Best Employer for Women list and 17th in the Education category for Best Employers for Diversity. SBU is one of 38 public institutions in the American Association of Universities (AAU), a group of top research universities. Located 60 miles east of New York City, SBU has a longstanding record of supporting underrepresented students and has been recognized nationally for a high upward social mobility index, moving students from the lowest quintile of parental income to the top quintile of graduate income, and diverse student body. The climate is mild and local public schools are excellent. The Stony Brook area is developing into a major high technology area of small business firms and offers numerous employment opportunities. Located along the northern shore of Long Island, the Stony Brook area is a desirable place to live.
