Position Description:
Department of Mathematics and Department of Physics
New York University Arts and Science
New York University seeks applicants for one faculty position in computational mathematics and physics, which will be a 50/50 joint appointment between the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics. The intersection of computation, mathematics, and physics should be understood in the broadest possible sense. Applications are encouraged from any and all research areas in which the physical and mathematical complexities are such that computation plays a useful role. This position is among the first appointments in a larger, multi-year Integrated Science Initiative that will build on NYU’s collaborative culture by recruiting faculty whose research makes explicit connections between departments and promises synergistic advances in fields ripe for cross-boundary breakthroughs.
The Department of Mathematics, part of the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences, has a long and distinguished history in both pure and applied mathematics, with an impressive record of accomplishments in applications to Physics. The Physics Department has leading research centers in Cosmology and Particle Physics, Soft Matter, Quantum Phenomena and Information, and includes faculty who already are collaborating with members of the Courant Institute. By hiring in the overlaps between Courant and Physics we seek to build programs in cross-disciplinary research areas.
More information about current research programs in the Department of Physics and its centers can be found online at https://physics.nyu.edu, and for the Department of Mathematics at https://math.nyu.edu/.
The opening is at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and is expected to establish a leading research program in their field. The candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with the equivalent of half the standard load at each department. The appointment can begin as early as September 1, 2025, pending administrative and budgetary approval.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $89,000 - $129,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Review of applications is expected to begin on or before December 2, 2024.
Both Arts and Science and the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences are at the heart of a leading research university that spans the globe. We seek scholars of the highest caliber that embody the diversity of the United States as well as the global society in which we live. We strongly encourage applications from women, racial and ethnic minorities, and other individuals who are under-represented in the profession, across color, creed, race, ethnic and national origin, physical ability, gender and sexual identity, or any other legally protected basis. NYU affirms the value of differing perspectives on the world as we strive to build the strongest possible university with the widest reach.
