Position Description
This position will conduct hands-on research at the Haravifard Lab. The research will have three components: (1) Sample Design; (2) Synthesis and Crystal Growth; (3) Characterization. (1) Sample Design: will work closely with the Haravifard group on designing new quantum magnetic material –the focus will be on new materials which exhibit exotic properties for applications in spintronics and quantum computing. Will renew safety materials and lab safety protocols before starting work in the lab. Perform literature review to become familiar with the topics and relevant methods to use for synthesis. (2) Synthesis and Crystal Growth: will use stoichiometry to synthesis new materials under supervision of senior members of the group and PI. The technique to be used to prepare powder samples will be based on solid-state reaction. Various methods will be used for single crystal growth -- including flux, chemical vapor transport, optical floating zone technique. (3) Characterization: will use multiple characterization techniques to assess the quality of produced samples. will do X-ray powder diffraction measurements to determine the purity of the synthesized samples. X-ray Laue experiments on single crystal samples performed at the Haravifard Lab to determine the quality of single crystals and their alignment. will help with cutting/polishing the single crystals prior to experiments. The candidate will also perform preliminary thermodynamics measurements on the produced samples – this includes magnetometry using SQUID magnetometer and heat capacity measurements using Physical Properties Management System (PPMS). This position requires a Bachelor or Bachelor of Science. Applications, including three letters of reference, a research statement, CV and list of publications & presentations must be submitted to receive full consideration.
