Position Description

The mission of Duke Health, Wellness and Physical Education (Duke HWPE) is to provide diverse opportunities that foster learning, community and healthy active lifestyles. Duke HWPE courses are credit-bearing and offered on the Duke academic schedule. Activity courses are graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory and lecture courses use traditional grades and carry curriculum codes.

Position Description: Duke University’s Department of Health, Wellness & Physical Education (HWPE) is seeking both part-time and full-time instructors to teach activity and lecture courses with a concentration in Health, Wellness, Exercise, Sports, Outdoors, Aquatics, and related fields. The Instructor position is non-regular rank/non-tenure track and affords the candidate with a healthy balance of teaching, service and outreach activities. The department fosters engaged and innovative teaching, strong classroom communities, and student/faculty wellbeing.

Instructors will deliver course content consistent with learning outcomes, contribute to the creation of assignments and other assessments, evaluate and grade student work, and be available for office hours to support student success. Additionally, Instructors will enforce department policies, assist the department in conducting pedagogical assessments, contribute to the growth of the department and profession through appropriate service activities and research or outreach opportunities, and represent the department and/or university on selected or requested committees. This posting is continuous to develop a qualified pool of interested candidates. Multiple positions will be hired from this advertisement. Qualifications: Required: Earned Master’s Degree in a related field with 2 years teaching experience at the college/university level (or equivalent pedagogical activities), working knowledge of principles and practices of curriculum development, interactive instructional strategies, and pedagogical assessment. Ability to teach HWPE activity and lecture courses, as assigned, with a concentration in Health, Wellness, Exercise, Sports, Outdoors, Aquatics, and related fields.

Preferred: Earned Doctorate (ABD considered) in a related field with 2 years teaching experience at the college/university level (or equivalent pedagogical activities), working knowledge of principles and practices of curriculum development, interactive instructional strategies, and pedagogical assessment. Ability to teach HWPE activity and lecture courses, as assigned, with a concentration in Health, Wellness, Exercise, Sports, Outdoors, Aquatics, and related fields.
