Position Description
Two or more PhD positions in theoretical physics towards scattering amplitudes, broadly defined, at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University, starting 2025/09/01, or as agreed. The PhD positions are for four years and nine months and part of the following two projects funded by the European Research Council: - ERC Starting Grant project AmpEFT (Scattering Amplitudes for Effective Field Theory: Simplicity and Structures from Classical to Quantum) with PI Chia-Hsien Shen. - ERC Synergy Grant project MaScAmp (Mathematics of Scattering Amplitudes) with PIs Ruth Britto (Trinity College Dublin), Francis Brown (University of Oxford), Axel Kleinschmidt (MPI for Gravitational Physics, Potsdam) and Oliver Schlotterer (Uppsala University). The main activity will be research in theoretical and mathematical physics related to scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory, gravity, string theory and effective field theory as well as their interface with particle phenomenology, algebraic geometry and number theory. Other duties at the department related to teaching and administration will be included in the positions (maximum 20 %). The successful candidates will join the Theoretical Physics Division in Uppsala which currently consists of approximately 30 researchers and offers a world-class environment for research in high-energy physics and mathematical physics. As a member of the AmpEFT group, the successful candidate will enjoy the opportunity to interact with the LeCosPA Center at National Taiwan University, whose PIs include Daniel Baumann and Yu-tin Huang. As part of the Synergy Grant, the successful candidate will be part of the larger MaScAmp team and is expected to participate in regular exchanges among the nodes in Dublin, Oxford, Potsdam and Uppsala. In both cases, we encourage and offer travel funds for extended visits at the respective partner institutes. Prerequisites: The positions require a masters degree or equivalent in physics or mathematics. The application must include a statement of approximately one page that summarizes the applicant's merits, academic experiences, and research interests (to be submitted as the ``cover letter''). In particular, the statement is an opportunity to let us know about specific inclination towards / research background in the fields of AmpEFT and / or MaScAmp. The application must also include a CV, copies of university grades, completed theses or manuscripts and other relevant publications. The applicant should arrange to have two or more letters of recommendation. Contact information for the letter writers should be included in the application. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV. *** Additionally, applicants are required to submit the same documents, without the letters of recommendation, to the Uppsala University website by January 15th 2025: *** https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/jobs-and-vacancies/job-details?query=774639 Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University's excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds. Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply. Those interested in potential positions at the other nodes of MaScAmp may apply directly at the following links: 1. Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Potsdam, Germany: https://www.aei.mpg.de/1201947/phd-mascamp-2025 2. Trinity College Dublin, Ireland: Send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, unofficial academic transcripts, and a brief statement of research experience and interests to loop-amplitudes@maths.tcd.ie, and arrange for two recommendation letters to be sent directly to the same address. 3. University of Oxford, UK: Further details are available at https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/node/70078 Please apply via https://evision.ox.ac.uk/urd/sits.urd/run/siw_ipp_lgn.login?process=siw_ipp_app_crs with proposed supervisor `Francis Brown’ and research team `Mathematical Physics’. When prompted for funding source, put `ERC Synergy grant’ (optional).
