University of Bristol, Faculty of Science

Position Description
Lecturer in Superconductivity
Job number: ACAD107743
Contract Type/Work Pattern: Open ended /
Full time
Salary: £42,632 - £47,874 (Grade J) or
£49,250 - £55,295 (Grade K) per annum depending on experience
The role
The School of Physics is seeking to
appoint a lecturer to support the taught and research programme of the EPSRC
CDT (Centre for Doctoral Training) in Superconductivity. The
Superconductivity-CDT is a 4-year training programme for graduate students,
involving the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford, and leads to a PhD
level qualification in the subject area of superconductivity. The first year of
the course involves a substantial training element, alongside a research
project.
What will you be doing?
The role involves delivering and
developing taught material, working closely with course teaching teams to
ensure content is engaging, dynamic, and aligns with established learning
objectives. Initially the focus will be on leading practical/computational
training modules, facilitating a student colloquium, organizing group projects,
and evaluating coursework. You will also contribute to student skill
development through training in writing and presentation and assist in
organizing an outreach program that connects our students with local schools.
In addition to teaching, you will
provide academic and pastoral support to help students navigate their studies
and progress within and across institutions. During their first year, students
will undertake a brief placement with one of our industrial or international
research facility partners; you will play a role in coordinating and
implementing these placements.
As part of the CDT management team, you
will attend and contribute to meetings, acting as a strong liaison with the
student body. This role requires a solid understanding of university
strategies, structures, policies, and the broader educational context, with a
focus on maintaining compliance with academic and ethical standards.
While the role is based in Bristol, it
includes extended periods of work, approximately six weeks per year, at Oxford
and Cambridge universities to support teaching within the CDT. Flexibility and
willingness to travel are essential.
You should apply if
You have a PhD in Physics, Materials
Science, Engineering or a closely related subject and have a passion for
achieving excellence in teaching and supporting students. You should be able to
deliver teaching relevant to the programme of the CDT in Superconductivity,
including practical training (experimental and/or computational). Post-doctoral
research experience in superconductivity or a closely related field, and
experience in delivering practical training or supervision of post-graduate
students are both desirable.
Additional information
Applications should include a cover
letter, a statement of teaching philosophy (no more than 2 sides of A4 each),
in addition to a full resume (curriculum vitae). Also to be included is a
statement (up to 1 side of A4) summarising your vision for equity, diversity
and inclusion (EDI), including how you will contribute to our collegial,
collaborative and inclusive community. All documents are required, and
incomplete applications will not be considered.
