Position Description

Job Title: Associate in Research Length of Commitment: 3 months with possible extension for up to another 3 months

Language Requirement: English, Russian; Turkic language familiarity will be useful.

Occupational Summary: The Associate in Research will work with Professor Charles Becker on research projects related to (a) satellite nightlight and daylight studies involving Central Asian and other former Soviet countries, (b) impact of electrification on school attendance in Tajikistan, using satellite data, (c) tracking patterns of Soviet mortality caused by collectivization and the Stalinist Great Terror.

The primary duties include (a) geo-coding satellite data at the pixel and higher levels, (b) running econometric models, (c) scanning in census data and converting it to computer-usable form, (d) scanning in NKVD arrest record data and converting it to computer-usable form, including geo-coding these data; (e) supervising undergraduate and beginning master’s research assistants Work Performed: at Duke University (access to computers and ArcGIS software, as well as print materials to be scanned make on-site location mandatory).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Qualifying candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree, from a well-regarded master’s program with graduate work in Economics and Computer Sciences. Skills with ArcGIS and satellite data manipulation, inter calibration, and analysis needed as well.
