Position Description
The Music and Theater Arts Section of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) with a specialty in composition, broadly defined. Position to begin July 1, 2025, or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. Candidates should hold a PhD or DMA in Music Composition, or a related field, by the start of employment. The qualified candidate is an active and innovative composer with a minimum of two years of teaching experience at the university level. Active engagement in other areas of music – including but not limited to areas such as improvisation, music technology, performance, production, scholarship, theory, etc. - will be taken into consideration but are not required. The Section offers supportive mentorship to junior faculty and seeks individuals who practice collaboration, empathy, and self-reflection in the service of sustaining an inclusive and welcoming academic culture. The successful candidate will teach subjects in composition and related topics in the existing curriculum and will subsequently develop new course offerings in line with their interests and the needs of the Section. The teaching load for an Assistant Professor is three classes per academic year. Assistant Professors are also expected to serve on committees, advise students, and participate fully in the governance of the Section, the School, and the Institute. Promotion and tenure will require evidence of innovative creative work that has the potential for tangible impact on the field. We request applications and other materials, including a) cover letter, b) CV, c) names of three referees (to be contacted for letters as needed), and d) a representative online portfolio of creative work, to include recordings and (if available) scores of 30-60 minutes of music. Candidates have the option of also including supplemental materials that will enhance our understanding of their creative practice, but these are not required. Additional materials, including further recordings, scores, and a teaching portfolio (that may include sample syllabi and teaching videos), may be requested at a later date. To receive full consideration, applications must be completed by February 14, 2025. MIT is an equal opportunity employer.
