Position Description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in Professor Lloyd Knox’s Research Group. The successful candidate will work on analysis of data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and have the opportunity to work on additional projects of mutual interest. The SPT Collaboration has been observing with the full SPT-3G camera since 2019. The data collected to date allow for powerful tests of the standard cosmological model, as described in Prabhu et al. (2024), with first results from a subset of these data in Ge et al. (2024). Work on SPT data could include development and application of methods for producing unlensed field spectra and CMB lensing spectra from multi-frequency maps, cosmological interpretation of such power spectra, or a combination of the two. Additional projects of mutual interest would likely have strong connections to testing and building of cosmological models. The Fellow would join the department’s community of astrophysicists and cosmologists, as well as a broader departmental community of researchers addressing questions of the dark universe in a variety of ways. This appointment comes with a competitive salary (starting at $66,737/year or higher depending on experience), a $10K/year research budget, and up to $3K of relocation funds. Basic Qualifications: Candidate must have completed a PhD in Physics or related areas prior to beginning employment. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with various aspects of cosmic microwave background data analysis, and/or with testing and building cosmological models, is preferred. Applications should include a cover letter (optional), curriculum vitae, list of publications (can be included in the CV), a brief description of past and proposed research, and three letters of recommendation. The appointment is initially for two years and renewable annually, subject to mutual agreement. Applying before January 6, 2025 is encouraged, although later applications may still be reviewed. UC Davis is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer, and particularly encourages applications from members of historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ community members, and others who demonstrate the ability to help us achieve our vision of a diverse and inclusive community.
