Position Description

The Macalester College Department of Political Science invites applications for a one-year, full-time visiting position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor (PhD), for the 2025- 2026 academic year, beginning in August 2025. Candidates should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in Political Science (ABD candidates will be considered; however, they must have their degree in hand prior to August 2025) with a focus in American Politics. We prefer candidates who can teach Politics and Policymaking, and U.S. City and Metro Politics, and can offer electives in American institutions (e.g. presidency, Congress, the federal bureaucracy, except the judiciary) or American political behavior (e.g. public opinion, media and politics, political psychology). Visa sponsorship is not available. Salary and benefits are competitive.

The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate curriculum by teaching Politics and Policymaking, City and Metro Politics, and a combination of three other American Politics courses from our catalogue. The teaching load is five courses per year.

Applicants should submit a cover letter that includes a statement of interest in Macalester and discusses demonstrated activity and contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in their teaching, advising, mentorship, curriculum, scholarship, service or community and professional engagement. Strong candidates will have experience and vision regarding teaching and mentorship of students of multiple and diverse backgrounds with attention to structural barriers that limit access to educational opportunities. Applications should also include a curriculum vitae; evidence of effective teaching (e.g., sample syllabi, course evaluations, comments in reference letters); and up to three reference letters.

All materials must be submitted to Academic Jobs Online. Inquiries can be directed to Professor Lesley Lavery, Search Committee Chair, llavery@macalester.edu. Applications received by February 24, 2025 will be granted full review.
