The Duke University Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Instructor to teach introductory physics in the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters. Duke’s introductory physics course sequences are described here: https://physics.duke.edu/undergraduate/course-selection/introductory-physics-course Introductory physics is usually taught by a team of instructors and teaching assistants with a lead instructor and in some cases a course coordinator. “On-sequence” lead instructorship of Physics 121 in the fall semester and of Physics 122 in the spring semester counts as a two-course teaching load. The expected teaching load for this position is five courses over the year. We anticipate: lead instructorship of the Duke Physics department’s new flagship physics course, Physics 121 (General Physics I, introductory mechanics, with calculus taught along the way) in fall 2025; lead instructorship of Physics 151 (Introductory Mechanics for engineers) in fall 2025; and lead instructorship of Physics 122 in spring 2026. The adaptation of some materials for the new pre-health course sequence may be required. The spring 2026 course assignment is flexible; contributions to other introductory course sequence teams amounting to a two-course load may be substituted. Applicants must provide proof of PhD degree prior to hire and should have a background in introductory physics teaching as well as strong interpersonal skills.
