Postdoctoral Associate - Learning Health Systems Research

Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is one of the country’s leading schools of health and rehabilitation sciences. It offers top-ranked degree programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, language and hearing sciences, health science, human physiology, behavior and health, and nutrition.

Sargent College’s Department of Physical Therapy in collaboration with Shepherd Center (Atlanta, GA), is seeking applications for a postdoctoral fellow who seeks to gain expertise in conducting learning health systems research as an embedded scientist. Learning Health Systems are environments where 'science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement and innovation,' that conduct research that supports and improves health system operations and outcomes through safe, efficient, and effective care.

The postdoctoral fellow will sustain and support a culture that celebrates the diversity of individuals and ideas, which values accountability, collaboration, and innovation. Mentoring: The fellow will be mentored by a faculty member at BU with experience conducting embedded Learning Health Systems Research and a health system mentor selected based on the specific research project. An individualized development plan will be established at the beginning of the fellowship to outline priority training activities.

Embedded Research Partnerships: The fellow will conduct embedded research at Shepherd Center. The academic mentor, health system mentor, and fellow will collaboratively design a research project that aligns with the fellow's interests and expertise, as well as the health system's priorities, all in support of the mission of both foundations to improve the lives of individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Support provided: The postdoctoral fellow will be supported for 1 year, in accordance with the Boston University Postdoctoral Compensation Guidelines and the Postdoctoral Scholars Policy. A second year will be considered based on the availability of continued funding and performance. Support will be provided for travel from Boston to Shepherd Center to support the research project.

Eligibility: The position requirements for the fellowship are a PhD, ScD, or other Academic Doctorate in Rehabilitation, Health Services Research, or a closely related field (e.g., epidemiology, sociology, or economics) and a strong interest in improving rehabilitative care and outcomes for individuals with neurologic diagnoses. Individuals must be willing to (re)locate to the Boston area for the duration of the fellowship and will be required to periodically travel to Atlanta, GA.
